Stage 3: Dial it in
Zoom in, one question at a time
You have your neighborhood from Stage 2. Now you find the house.
Stage 3 is a short series of cards, each one changing just enough to answer a single question. Your comparisons on one card steer the next.
One variable at a time
The mistake most people make is changing three things at once, getting a better result, and having no idea which change did it. This stage does the opposite. It holds everything steady and moves one knob a little, so every card teaches you exactly one thing.
Each round the steps get smaller. First a wide step to find the direction, then half that, then half again, closing in on the sweet spot. It is the same way you would tune anything by ear: big adjustments first, tiny ones near the end.
You are mapping the response, not just guessing
As you go, you learn how your material actually reacts. Maybe a little more power makes it a lot darker, right up to a point where it suddenly stops. Maybe an extra pass matters more than speed. That shape, how the mark responds as you turn a knob, is the real prize.
It is also what lets you tune the recipe yourself later. When a future job needs a slightly different look, you will not be starting over. You will already know which direction to nudge, because you watched the material respond here.
The speed trade-off shows up here
This is where you often find that two settings look the same, but one burned in half the time. That is not a tie, that is a decision. On a one-off it might not matter. On part number 500 it is the difference between a good afternoon and a long one.
The Test Lab keeps both in front of you, the best-looking recipe and the fastest one that still looks right, so you choose with the trade-off visible instead of finding out later.
When to stop
You stop when the steps get small enough that the differences stop mattering. At that point you are not looking at rough options anymore, you are looking at two or three finalists that all look genuinely good. That is exactly what the next stage is built to settle.
Down to a couple of finalists? Stage 4 settles them head to head.
